Choir Concert Date: 22nd May 2009 Time:3:30pm-9:30pm Venue: Victoria Concert Hall Band Concert Date: 23rd May 2009 Time: 3:30pm-9:30pm Venue: Victoria Concert Hall Mag's Reflection For the choir and band concerts held at Victoria Concert Hall, we were selling flowers for $2 per stalk. At the start, we had to cut the stalks of all of them and tie cards to each flower before the concert started, so the number of flowers seemed never ending. However I think our team was very productive and worked well together, just sitting outside the concert hall and cutting/tying. For choir concert, the flowers sold very slowly and towards the end we still had quite a few flowers left so we had to cut down prices to $2 for 3 small ones, or $1 per stalk. Most of the people going to watch the concerts had brought their own flowers already so we couldn’t sell many. After the concert we went into the concert hall itself to get our friends to buy the last few flowers and at the end of everything we took home the remaining few flowers. For band concert it was slightly better, maybe word spread that flowers would be sold. We ordered fewer flowers because we had many extra from choir the previous night, and we managed to sell out all our flowers. We even encountered some people who donated to our cause instead of buying flowers. All in all I would say the flower selling was pretty successful because we managed to sell almost all the flowers except some that were broken already. Sihui's Reflection Well, the choir and band concert is like the second and third concert we are selling flowers. But this time, it's nice Geberras and they're really colourfull! hahas^^ I think was more optimistic about selling these flowers than the roses at the CO concert as they look more attractive and expensive. However that was not the case. When the guests start to stream in,the flowers were not selling fast enough compared to the roses. I still remember that everyone downstairs were extremely depressed as seriously almost 5 out of 5 people we asked were only buying flowers! Some of us even tried to venture and and sell it to passerby around VCH. I was so dejected that Wen Qing and I did not have the mood to watch the concert. We stayed outside the halls with our flowers, trying to sell it to the late comers. Actually, I was really depressed that I almost gave up, however, the enthusiasm of the other members and encouragement from our friends and even from guests, we managed to continue on.There was even people who donated 10dollars in one go. I was extremely touched. After Ms Yanti came with the sandwiches and helped us to arrange the flowers into bouquets, we braced ourselves for the last lap. (We still had more than half the flowers left! But we could not leave the flowers at VCH overnight to sell the next day) When the crowd stream out at the end of the concert, we all rushed towards our friends and even strangers, shoving flowers in their faces and pleading them to buy from us. We had to sell all of them. Luckily there were quite a few number of kind aunties who bought one bouquet each and friends who eventually sink into our hard core selling. :) the best and the most touching one was this uncle who me and Wen Qing tried our luck in the hall when the lights were already off. He bought like 5-10 flowers from us! That really made our day. Even though we did not manage to sell all the flowers these small things really made that day really enjoying. Compared to the choir the band concert was really different. hahas. really, the contrast is like really great! even though there is only one colour of the geberras, pink, the flowers sold really fast! By the end of the interval, we like left only those broken flowers which by the end of the concert was all sold out. That day was really WOW! hahas, it was the first time that the sales was so good. However, everyone at the concert was also worried about the drama side which was selling food as we heard that they were not doing very well. Well, in conclusion, I really learnt a lot about these two events, we really cannot give up no matter how things look though and we really have to depend on each other for support. If there is only one of us, we might not be able to get through all these! so thanks all and GOOD JOB! Ashleen's Reflection Choir (22nd May, Friday @ VCH): Members reached fairly early to prepare the flowers Good Realised that a lot of the flowers (esp the yellow ones) were either already broken or in very bad shape, therefore we decided to arrange them into small bouquets to sell Good idea and initiation to solve problem When meals were brought back, some of the orders were missing Next time check everything before leaving, so as to avoid wasting more time and effort later on. We started selling around 7pm, but there were very few people, so we thought maybe more people would turn out later. To our dismay, the small flow of people persisted and to make things worse, a lot of them had already bought flowers on the way there. Next time should make an announcement before hand and tell the performers to spread the message to their friends and relatives that flowers are available in the concert hall itself, and the money will be used for good cause. Many of us were rather affected and as the situation continued, it dampened our morale to continue the selling. However, some members (such as JinYi, WenQing, HanLe, and of course there were many others too) encouraged the team and pushed us on. Good! We should keep a positive mindset no matter what happens. We were still left with almost two full buckets of flowers even after the intermission. This happened mainly because we had over-estimated the number of audience. Next time, we should consider all aspects before making any decision. Only in this way can we maximize the amount of profit earned. In order to clear the flowers, we went all out; selling one for one dollar, ten for six dollars etc. Although this may not be the most ideal outcome, at least it helped to cover the cost. Furthermore, we did not waste any time on asking and waiting for permission, so for the initiative part, it was recommendable. Band (23rd May, Saturday @ VCH) Members still went earlier to prepare the flowers, though some went too early and found themselves having nothing to do after some time not bad. I mean having nothing to do is at least better than having too much to do. We managed to sell quite a lot before the performance because more people turned up and most of them bought from us. Some even paid without getting the flowers! It’s a good idea that we told them what we were going to do with the money. It makes people feel good when they know they are actually helping someone. We sold almost every thing by the time intermission ended and everything was good, except that some people were disappointed when they knew we only provide pink flowers. It was Ms Azyanti’s birthday that night and we specially left a pretty flower for her, but she ain’t very touched by that. |
